TWENTY-THREE

‘Damn, we’re really tight on time,’ Hollie cursed. ‘How well do you know your way around the city?’

‘Well,’ DC Gordon replied, ‘I’ve lived here all my life. I know the rat runs, if that’s what you mean.’

‘You’re driving again, then,’ Hollie instructed. ‘I do not want to be late to my first press briefing. I got too caught up with what DS Patel and DC Langdon discovered. It serves me right.’

They got in the car and Hollie started reading the latest briefing notes to make sure she was fully on top of all the latest intel in the case. She saw that the formal ID had come through and made a catch-up call to DS Anderson to find out how it had gone.

‘So, it’s definitely her?’ Hollie confirmed.

‘Yes, boss.’

‘How did Mother Davies take it?’

‘As you’d expect. The doc had done a good job with the body, I’ll give him that. What a bloody mess.’

‘Is someone with Mother Davies now?’

‘I’ve run her back to the convent, and I made sure there was someone with her before I left.’

‘Great, thanks for that, DS Anderson. I’ll catch up with you shortly. Thanks for handling that, it’s never an easy task.’

‘Is that the victim identified, ma’am?’ DC Gordon asked.

DS Anderson continued speaking before she had time to answer.

‘Did you send DC Langdon back to work in the office?’ His voice was terse.

‘Yes, she’s sustained a small injury. Why?’

There was silence at the end of the phone.

‘Is there something you want to say, DS Anderson?’

‘No, boss, that’s your choice. We’re waiting for you at The Country Park. Shall I let them know you’re on your way?’

‘The Country Park? What’s that? A hotel? I thought we were doing the briefing at The Royal Hotel?’

‘No, boss, didn’t I tell you earlier? DCC Warburton asked for a change of venue. She thinks it will help jog more memories if we’re close to the bridge. It’ll also be good for the TV people to have the bridge in the background—’

‘For fuck’s sake,’ Hollie cursed. She turned to DC Gordon.

‘There’s been a change of location. It’s at The Country Park now.’

‘That’s going to be cutting it fine. The traffic’s going to be busy.’

‘Can you get me there?’

‘I’ll do my best. Make sure your seatbelt is fastened properly.’

DC Gordon revved the engine and pulled out past a driver who was making a meal of reversing into a parking space.

‘Sorry, mate, but we can’t wait all day,’ he called over as if the driver could hear him.

‘Why didn’t you tell me about the venue change when we spoke earlier?’

Hollie could barely contain herself. If she blew up at Anderson now, she knew she’d be all over the place just in time for the press briefing. It would have to wait.

‘Sorry, boss, I thought I had. My mistake. It won’t happen again. And I’ve got some more bad news,’ Anderson continued.

‘Go on,’ Hollie encouraged him.

‘You know the kid who you threw onto the roof—’

‘Who lunged at me and fell through—’

‘Whatever—’

‘No, not whatever!’ Hollie snapped.
