TWENTY-THREE
âDamn, weâre really tight on time,â Hollie cursed. âHow well do you know your way around the city?â
âWell,â DC Gordon replied, âIâve lived here all my life. I know the rat runs, if thatâs what you mean.â
âYouâre driving again, then,â Hollie instructed. âI do not want to be late to my first press briefing. I got too caught up with what DS Patel and DC Langdon discovered. It serves me right.â
They got in the car and Hollie started reading the latest briefing notes to make sure she was fully on top of all the latest intel in the case. She saw that the formal ID had come through and made a catch-up call to DS Anderson to find out how it had gone.
âSo, itâs definitely her?â Hollie confirmed.
âYes, boss.â
âHow did Mother Davies take it?â
âAs youâd expect. The doc had done a good job with the body, Iâll give him that. What a bloody mess.â
âIs someone with Mother Davies now?â
âIâve run her back to the convent, and I made sure there was someone with her before I left.â
âGreat, thanks for that, DS Anderson. Iâll catch up with you shortly. Thanks for handling that, itâs never an easy task.â
âIs that the victim identified, maâam?â DC Gordon asked.
DS Anderson continued speaking before she had time to answer.
âDid you send DC Langdon back to work in the office?â His voice was terse.
âYes, sheâs sustained a small injury. Why?â
There was silence at the end of the phone.
âIs there something you want to say, DS Anderson?â
âNo, boss, thatâs your choice. Weâre waiting for you at The Country Park. Shall I let them know youâre on your way?â
âThe Country Park? Whatâs that? A hotel? I thought we were doing the briefing at The Royal Hotel?â
âNo, boss, didnât I tell you earlier? DCC Warburton asked for a change of venue. She thinks it will help jog more memories if weâre close to the bridge. Itâll also be good for the TV people to have the bridge in the backgroundââ
âFor fuckâs sake,â Hollie cursed. She turned to DC Gordon.
âThereâs been a change of location. Itâs at The Country Park now.â
âThatâs going to be cutting it fine. The trafficâs going to be busy.â
âCan you get me there?â
âIâll do my best. Make sure your seatbelt is fastened properly.â
DC Gordon revved the engine and pulled out past a driver who was making a meal of reversing into a parking space.
âSorry, mate, but we canât wait all day,â he called over as if the driver could hear him.
âWhy didnât you tell me about the venue change when we spoke earlier?â
Hollie could barely contain herself. If she blew up at Anderson now, she knew sheâd be all over the place just in time for the press briefing. It would have to wait.
âSorry, boss, I thought I had. My mistake. It wonât happen again. And Iâve got some more bad news,â Anderson continued.
âGo on,â Hollie encouraged him.
âYou know the kid who you threw onto the roofââ
âWho lunged at me and fell throughââ
âWhateverââ
âNo, not whatever!â Hollie snapped.
